Floating reduces stress

Self care is the latest buzz on the street….and by street I mean social media.  But if this makes you think of laying in bed watching old movies eating Bon-Bon’s you are missing the point.  Not that it’s a bad idea, but people are more stressed than ever and allowing yourself to reduce that stress is what it’s really about.  Disconnecting from the world for a bit and allowing yourself to slow down.

John C. Lilly developed the first “sensory deprivation” tank in 1954.  His theories were not main stream and looked down upon by many respected members of both the medical and scientific fields.  However, he knew that if the brain was cut off from stimulus it actually gained more clarity and focus.  Float tanks have come along way since the 50’s and now we have state of the art flotation tanks with intercom, music, and lights.  Many studies have been performed on your brain activity during a float session.  People have even increased their creativity by floating.

You may have heard that you will hallucinate if you are deprived of stimulus.  It’s highly unlikely in a 60 minute float session.  However most just experience a calm restful state.  The process was originally called Restricted Environmental Stimulation Therapy or REST.  Floating can help reduce anxiety, it can also help with insomnia, chronic pain and even addiction.  The more often you float the better your results.

Women find it harder initially to relax in the float tank, as we have a hard time turning off our minds.  Men seem to compartmentalize better and in short, they relax a bit faster.  But with repeated floats your brain goes in to the relaxed state a bit faster each time.  You will also notice that your daily stress level will continue to decrease.

Floating can help you reach the most relaxed state and your brainwaves prove it.  During the day your brain is producing Beta waves.  These help us solve issues, make decisions and keep us going.  Alpha waves are a bit slower and will show up during your favorite relaxing activities.  Then you have your Theta waves, these are the brainwaves occur right before you drift off to sleep or when you first wake up.  The final one is is Delta brainwaves, these only happen during deep sleep.  When you float on a regular basis your brain slows down. You are more likely to increase the endorphins and reduce the cortisol and adrenaline production.  Theta waves are responsible for this relaxed state.

Why practice yoga in a salt cave?

When you practice yoga in our salt cave you are doing more than just finding some quiet time for an hour.  You are also experiencing a respiratory cleansing therapy.  As you may know, yoga is focusing on your breath and staying present in the moment.  Not thinking about running to the grocery store, the laundry at home, or when the kids need to finish those science projects.  Being present in the moment helps calm the chatter in your brain and keep you balanced.  Literally and physically.  When you tie the breath to the posture you focus your mind and body on the same task at the same time.  But why is this important?  Kelly Simmons from Koastal SUP yoga here in St.Augustine shares some really important information about this

Salt DenYoga — Instructor: Kelly Simmons

“Increase body awareness and stamina by focusing on breath work and the principles of alignment, to create a solid foundation for a continued and/or expansive yoga practice. Inhaling the cave’s salty air will allow the absorption of allergens, toxins, and foreign substances that will then exit your system with each exhalation. The flow of yoga postures and yogic breath techniques, combined with the salt’s negative ions, will help improve your mood, balance your energy level, and reduce stress. You may also notice relief from common sinus and respiratory problems, such as allergies.”

So come and check out this new class every Wednesday from 6-7pm in our Salt Cave!

We can’t wait to see you.  For more information about Koastal SUP yoga you can go to www.koastalsupyoga.com for more information.

The benefits of a spa day

Everyone knows that spending some time relaxing is good for you.  But do you know why certain spa therapies, done in a specific order can help you be healthier? We here at Salt Spa have done extensive research to bring together the best possible combination of relaxing, detoxifying, and recharging services to help you not just relax, but to maintain a healthier lifestyle.

Flotation Therapy – Relax

This has been described as deprivation therapy, since you are in a closed pod with no outside stimulants.   Our pod is filled  with over 1,000 lbs of Epsom salt in 10-12 inches of water.  You are cut off from outside stimulants and because of the salinity of the water you will float like a cork.  Even if you don’t float in swimming pools or even in the ocean.  Your body absorbs the Epsom salt through your largest organ, your skin.  By absorbing the salt this way your body knows exactly how to process it. This type of salt is also very detoxifying.  It will remove any bacteria on your skin.  This service can help ease aches and pains and aids in reducing inflammation. Magnesium is a vital mineral that can help reduce the rates of heart disease, strokes, osteoporosis,  joint pain and more.  This detoxifying crystal is also good for skin, hair and digestion.

Infra red sauna- Recover

Infra red saunas offer detoxification at the cellular level.  Because it uses near, mid, and far infra red rays it heats the body not the air around you like a steam sauna does.  You are more comfortable and are able to sweat out toxins in a relaxing environment.  Our sauna also includes Acoustic Resonance Therapy. Using specially designed speakers and music that resonates at a healing frequency.  This also raises positive vibrations and gives you an energy boost. You simultaneously feel the music you hear. Our sauna also has chromotherapy.  This ancient therapy has been used all over the world for healing.  Different colors on the spectrum target different areas.  Everything from weight loss to your nervous system.

Salt Cave – Recover

Our salt cave is filled with over 25,000 lbs of both white Polish crystal salt and Pink Himalayan salt.  The cave is a true micro-climate maintaining 69 degrees with 60% humidity provided by our 2 graduation towers.  The salt water in the graduation towers creates a salty aerosol that helps clean dirt and debris from your bronchial airways.  Just 45 minutes in our salt cave is equivalent to 3 days at the beach!  This can be beneficial to those who suffer with allergies, asthma, sinus problems, and other respiratory conditions.  The negative ions released in the cave help calm and soothe you.  Our bodies are bombarded by positive ions due to our extended use of gadgets.  Spend 45 minutes unplugged in our natural cave setting to lay back in an anti-gravity lounge chair and be lulled by our relaxing music.

The truth about salt

According to an article published in the NY Times in 2012, there are some compelling reasons to be an advocate for your own health.

Salt, We Misjudged You

https://www.nytimes.com/2012/06/03/opinion/sunday/we-only-think-we-know-the-truth-about-salt.html

“The idea that eating less salt can worsen health outcomes may sound bizarre, but it also has biological plausibility and is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, too. A 1972 paper in The New England Journal of Medicine reported that the less salt people ate, the higher their levels of a substance secreted by the kidneys, called renin, which set off a physiological cascade of events that seemed to end with an increased risk of heart disease. In this scenario: eat less salt, secrete more renin, get heart disease, die prematurely.”

Healing with Crystal Salt

The practice of crystal healing is an ancient metaphysical art that can bring balance to your body and prosperity to your life by utilizing vibrations of crystals.

The vibrating harmonics of crystals are used to calibrate the vibrations in the individual’s psychic aura, much like a tuning form can help find the correct pitch. The vibrations of crystals help to balance out of tune vibes stuck in a person’s auric field. The healing is different for everyone and depends on what a person needs to shift in their energy. Metaphysical properties of Himalayan salt promotes spiritual, mental and emotional balance by purifying the body of negativity and encouraging an overall sense of harmony within one’s day to day life.

-Beata Kosakowska

“Atoms form the heart of a crystal. Inside an atom, dynamic particles rotate in constant motion around a central point, generating energy. So although a crystal may look outwardly serene, it is actually a seething molecular mass vibrating at a specific, but variable, frequency. “
Judy Hall-Crystals: how to use crystals and their energy to enhance your life

Types of Salt: All you need to know

The medical establishment villainizes salt; however, it makes no distinction between different types of salt.

We will start with the worst version of salt….

Not all salt is created equal

Table salt

You should try to avoid this type of salt. It is refined and has been stripped of all minerals. Advocates of traditional medicine believe that processed table salt is energetically dead, as its crystals are completely isolated from one another. For the body to metabolize chemical table salt, it must expend tremendous amounts of energy to keep the body in a state of optimum fluid balance. Many minerals removed from salt help balance blood pressure consequently. table salt causes gross blood pressure fluctuations instead of stabilizing it. This well known danger have created an industry of low sodium foods.

The average American consumes 3,400 mg of sodium chloride a day, over 1,000 mg more than the recommended limit. The body cannot dispose of it in a natural, healthy way, which can lead to tissue irritation, water retention, and high blood pressure.

Table salt has all of its minerals removed, which would otherwise help to balance blood pressure. Consequently, table salt causes gross blood pressure fluctuations as opposed to stabilizing it. This well-known danger has created an entire industry of “low sodium” foods.

Processed foods are very high in sodium, which is always in the form of table salt, artificial flavors, or flavor enhancers. Ironically, low sodium products often contain monosodium glutamate, a sodium-based excitotoxin that causes heart attacks in people who do not have enough magnesium. Insufficient magnesium is probably
the most common reason for mysterious heart failures in young athletes, who simply fall over dead at sporting events.

Salt is either found in rock form, where it is mined, or free flowing in the ocean. Over 100 years ago, salt used to only be found in rock form, which had to be ground. In 1924, Morton’s Salt Company, which controls most of the salt in the U.S., was required to add iodine to their salt at the request of the government. Table
salt also contains additives to make it more free flowing. Ferrocyanide, talc, and silica aluminate are commonly included. Aluminum intake leads to neurological disorders, particularly when no selenium is provided to help the body to chelate it. Aluminum bio-accumulates inside the body, causing further degeneration over time. Talc is a known carcinogen, though its effects upon ingestion have not been heavily studied. Although talc was once used in baby powders, the majority of those products now use cornstarch instead, because of the known health risks. Despite its prohibition in all other foods, the F.D.A. has a special provision to allow talc in table salt, due to toxicity issues. According to current regulations, table salt can be up to 2% talc.

Sea Salt is better for you, but…

Unrefined sea salt is likely not harmful in moderate amounts. It contains selenium, which helps to chelate toxic heavy metals from the body. It also contains boron, which helps prevent osteoporosis,
and chromium, which regulates blood sugar levels. In addition, it contains one of the only safe sources of copper. Copper helps the body form new arteries when the main arteries are clogged.

However, considering the increasing pollution of our seas, it may not be wise to consume too much sea salt. There is recent evidence that sea salt may contain amounts of micro plastics.

The healthiest forms of salt

Food grade rock salt from mines in Klodawa, Poland,Himalayan Salts, and other naturally mined or obtained through evaporation by unpolluted areas are the healthiest forms of salt.

Himalayan salt is a type of rock salt best known for its striking pink color, which comes from the natural presence of several trace minerals, including magnesium and iodine. Himalayan salt is unrefined and hand-mined from caves in northern Pakistan. Because it’s millions of years old and has sat untouched, many people believe that Himalayan crystal salt is a better option than standard table salt, which may contain toxins and pollutants.

Himalayan salt helps to regulate water levels in the body; encourage healthy blood pressure; reduce cramps and the appearance of aging; and promote cellular energy balance, healthy sleep patterns, and sinus, kidney and gallbladder health. Because Himalayan salt is a natural negative ion generator, it can also help boost your mood and provide a mental calmness and clarity.

Healthy salts make the body a hostile environment for pathogens such as bacteria and parasites. Its specific toxicity to pathogenic life forms is why salt is so beneficial. The presence of sodium ions is
essential for muscle contractions, including the most important muscle, the heart. Salt is important for removing the acidity from brain cells to improve brain function.

Salt has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. It loosens excessive mucus and speeds up mucociliary transport. It also removes pathogens like airborne pollen and reduces lgE level (immune system oversensitivity).

Differences Between Artificial and Natural Salt Therapy

Speleotherapy (from Greek speleos=cave) is a natural treatment which has been practiced in the old salt mines of Eastern Europe since the early 19th Century. Speleotherapy treatment was discovered in Poland in 1843 by Dr. Felix Boczkowski.

Dr. Boczkowski noticed that metal and coal miners had a tendency to experience severe respiratory problems, but salt miners tended to be healthier than most people. In fact, during the middle ages, they did not succumb to the bubonic plague.

Salt Spa St. Augustine seeks to replicate the healing microclimate climate of a natural salt mine, also called speleotherapy, in our salt cave.

Speleotherapy is a process that involves using the health enhancing effects of a salt mine’s natural microclimate to treat respiratory conditions. Salt cave therapy is common all over Eastern Europe and has become a standard feature of medical spa treatment there. The Wieliczka salt mine in Poland is the largest subterranean medical respiratory hospital in the world.  Operated by National
Ministry of Polish Health, it treets up to 350 patients per year. The making of Salt Spa St. Augustine was inspired by the Wieliczka mine and its famous medical treatment facility.

Speleotherapy, which involves breathing the negatively ionized,  mineral infused air of a salt mine, is one of the most effective alternative respiratory therapies. Salt is used medically in treatment of many health conditions with positive results.  The cave’s air has a high microbiological cleanliness from fungi, pollen, bacteria and dust mites, which can cause allergic reactions or asthma attacks; it reduces any kind of irritation, and the diseased symptoms are reduced and completely eliminated when the patient is in the cave.

Below are some of the special characteristics and benefits of a salt mine micro-climate used in speleotherapy:

  • It has a stable temperature and humidity.
  • The air lacks airborne pollutants like pollen.
  • Speleotherapy works without any medical treatment or drug use.
  • The cave air contains no or almost no dust, reducing the chance of irritation and completely eliminating the symptoms of diseases from the body.
  • In addition to treating or reducing the symptoms of asthma, speleotherapy is also known to reduce various symptoms of allergies, other breathing problems etc.
  • Nervous system dysfunction can also be treated with the use of speleotherapy.

The salt cave at Salt Spa is filled with over 25,000 pounds of Himalayan and Polish crystal salts. Due to the large amount of salt
air controlled environment, specific humidity of 50-60% a unique microclimate is achieved within the cave. The climate is rich in ions, minerals and micro-elementary particles like sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium. These minerals are naturally absorbed into your body during the therapy by breathing the saturated air into the lungs, thus improving your health, performance and overall fitness, no matter your age.

The Salt Cave at Salt Spa of Saint Augustine is designed to inspire total mind and body relaxation, as well as the rehabilitation of common respiratory conditions like:

  • Allergies
  • Asthma
  • Bronchitis
  • Colds and flu
  • Emphysema
  • Rhinitis
  • Sinusitis
  •  Effects of Smoking

In addition, the cave aids red blood cell production and strengthens the digestive system. It not only remove toxins and fat cells within the body, but also helps reduce fever, stop bleeding, and can improve heart and kidney functions.

Salt Cave at Salt Spa St. Augustine

The salt cave at Salt Spa is equipped with a therapeutic ultrasonic nebulizer, built especially for salt caves, which generates an active salt fog into the air. Mist containing salt, negative ions and minerals  inhaled easily and gently into the lungs without causing  irritation. We run this at certain intervals throughout the day to maintain a consistent humidity. The salt cave is also equipped with two brine graduation towers, similar to those found in Poland. The brine waterfall at Salt Spa contains a rare- mined iodized salt from Bochnia  mine in Poland. Iodine is an extremely important nutrient to maintain cognitive function and maintain a healthy thyroid. Heavily saturated salt water is continually circulated to the top of the walls and slowly drips down; salt collects on the twigs and minerals from the water evaporate into the air, thus creating a therapeutic micro-climate around the structure. The brine aerosol has essential prophylactic properties. During the course of a day, our lungs accumulate dust that is contained in the air we breathe. Salt works to expel these particles by opening up our airways.

Our salt cave sessions are 45 minutes in length. Guests sit on zero gravity chairs, accompanied by soothing music, which helps you relax, calm down and enjoy your service.

Due to increasing technology and environmental pollution, more people have begun to suffer from respiratory conditions. Dust; cigarette fumes; electrical appliances such as TVs, computers, and high-voltage networks; and external pollution produce large quantities of positive ions, which create an electrical imbalance in the air. Negative ions are extremely important element to optimize health. When the quantity of negative ions is lowered, people inhale more positive ions from the air. This can cause headaches, lethargy, dizziness, nausea, depression, indigestion, and irritability. Tests conducted in hospitals have found increasing the quantity of negative ions significantly lowers the percentage of harmful bacteria in the air. This causes patient wounds to heal faster, shortening their convalescence time. People who were exposed to higher levels of negative ions in the air indicated these positive results:

  • Achieving optimal weight
  • Decrease of blood pressure
  • Increase of energy and stamina

What is dry halotherapy?

Halotherapy (from Greek halos=salt) was developed as a medical technology in Russia in 1989. It uses a dry salt  generator to disperse dry  micro particles of salt creating a positively charged environment of the salt room. In order for a salt to be absorbed by the body it has to contain a mixture of water and salt ( humidity between 50 -60 percent). When micronic salt dust is released from a halo-generator without  appropriate humidity in a room it may irritate client’s bronchial tubes and cause aggravated  coughing.  Similar  reaction can be observed  when one is exposed to a dry, windy air of  micro particles, allergens and pollutants in some climates  and polluted cities causing a stress on respiratory system.  It is important to know that any kind of medical nebulizing for respiratory treatment always uses liquid to carry medicine via inhaler to patients lungs.

Here in the United States, halotherapy is growing in popularity. There are two kinds: wet and dry. Most commonly, dry salt therapy is used in rooms with varying salt décor, equipped with a halo generator. The halo generator grinds pharmaceutical salt into micro particles and releases them into a fine dust. Once inhaled, these salt particles are said to absorb irritants from the respiratory system. Most dry halotherapy rooms are almost always void of humidity, which is a vital element for carrying ionized salt particles to the airways. Studies on dry salt therapy are inconclusive.

Wet forms of halotherapy include gargling or drinking salt water (also called Sole), using salt for nasal irrigation, salt baths and flotation in tanks filled with high concentration of Epsom salt and water. Salt Spa of St. Augustine is equipped with two flotation tanks.
